An article from the Wall Street Journal talks about new research that indicates that increased access to family planning programs is linked to higher incomes and better college completion later in life. This is a no-brainer to us and the reason why Teen Success educates our members on contraceptive methods and encourages them to use a method that is right for them. We also ensure that each of sites has access to a "linked clinic" that they can go to for reproductive health services. In 2012-13 there was a 44% increase in birth control usage among Teen Success members.
When our members are able to maintain their family size, they are more able to concentrate on the goals they have for their futures. Things such as completing high school, going to college, getting a job, etc.
The research also mentions that family planning programs may also cut down on fertility rates and reduce family size, which allows parents to invest more in the children they do end up having and potentially increasing their prospects and opportunities.
