On a recent Tuesday afternoon in East Palo Alto, Teen Success facilitators Ana and Latu held "office hours" in which they met with teen mothers to enroll them in the program. They met Katia, a 17 year-old who is eight months pregnant. Katia had been enrolled in a youth leadership program in the community but left when she became pregnant because she was embarrassed and worried they would judge her. She was eager to join Teen Success so she could continue being involved in out-of-school activities but in an environment she felt comfortable in.
That day Ana and Latu also met 16 year-old Diosela, mother of a nine month old son. Diosela grew up in a family of eleven children and got pregnant during a difficult time following the loss of her mother. At the time she didn't care about school but since the birth of her son, she is re-energized to finish her education. She decided to join Teen Success to help her reach this goal.
These interactions took place within the safe space of the Ravenswood Family Health Center, where we have a unique collaboration to reach teen parents from the community with the unique social support and empowerment Teen Success provides. Our support group in East Palo Alto meets at the health center every week, all year long. The center is where most of our East Palo Alto members and their children receive health care services, making it a convenient and comfortable place to meet.
Collaboration is at the heart of Teen Success, Inc. as we implement the program in partnership with organizations embedded in communities of need. We use this collaborative approach in order to build upon existing services and have deeper, more lasting impact. Working together, we are better able to help teen moms finish high school, develop goals for the future, and get on a path to self-sufficiency.
As friends and supporters of Teen Success, Inc., we are grateful to you for recognizing the value of our approach and helping us make more of an impact on families and communities.
